Social and environmental justice for South Sudan

The pledge!

We the undersigned will do everything in our power to ensure that the people of South Sudan live healthy and happy lives by getting clean water to drink and use.

To achieve that, we will do everything in our power to put an end to the Black Tide of oil pollution. It is poisoning South Sudan’s ground water, waterways (including the Sudd and the Nile) and land.

To bring that about, we will do everything in our power to ensure that the government of South Sudan

            enforces the Petroleum Act of 2011

            equitably shares the oil revenues among South Sudan‘s communities and people –

            also retroactively;

            sets up, funds, staffs and ably administers the facilities needed to treat the lead and
other forms of oil-caused poisoning afflicting millions of people of South Sudan;

            compells the companies owning the consortia producing and transporting oil to

            put an immediate end to the oil spills, wastes, leaks and chemicals issuing from their
facilities and pipelines, and to compensate the victims of such

            institutes an absolutely thorough and thus credible assessment of the damage

            wrought over the last two decades by this oil pollution; and brings the perpetrators
of such to justice

            remediates the homes, farmland, grazing pastures and groundwater contaminated by oil

            resettles the victims of oil pollution whose homes and lands are beyond remediation

            sets up panels comprised of independent experts and residents to oversee
the workings of the oil industry.
